The work that we do

The Zimbabwe Agricultural Welfare Trust has been formed from the need for an International Umbrella group working toward the relief and sustainance of the Zimbabwean agricultural sector.

As well as directly funding our own developement and support projects, we work closely with the many organisations on the ground in Zimbabwe and are able to utilise their incredible presence and reach in the outlying areas, which are largely hidden and forgotten about in the turmoil which now grips the country.

Our mandate and object can be viewed by Clicking Here … they areĀ  straightforward and self explanatory, we are governed and accountable to the Charities Commission of England and Wales.

Strategic Breakdown

We at the Zimbabwe Agricultural Welfare Trust are a volunteer organistion. What is most essential for us it that we have enough funding for

Workforce support - In the case of settler occupied or designated farms one of the major areas of concern is the fate of the community who rely on the farm for a livelyhood. Very often, and in the majority of the cases that we support, the continuing farming of the land is disallowed, if the farm is not working and generating income the costs of the farm are not able to be met. This impacts directly on the workers because their wages are the number one cost for most operating farms.

The only option is to wind down the farming operations thus leaving the workers with no livelihoods and the farmer with no prospect of resuming operations in the future.

Sometimes the cost of retrenching cannot be met anyway without income, leaving everyone in an even worse situation. To try to combat this, Zawt is committing to contribute toward the costs of maintaining the labour force in-situ in the short term. This serves to keep the community together, to maintain ‘employment’ and a living as a result and to allow for options to the farmer and his workers in the future.

Education – In some areas we are funding the continued education of the children of the effected communities. Without income and support the workers are unable to meet the costs of their childrens schooling, and the Farmers are often unable to contribute in the long term. As a result we are seeing unprecedented numbers of children being left without education. Where we can, we are contributing school fees directly to the schools in question in order to keep the children in continuing education.

Health Care – Large swathes of the agricultural community are now living in a state of shock, trauma and in substandard accomodation. We are committed to the provision of key health workers in the regions of greatest turmoil. Now more than ever there is a real need for continuing provision of healthcare. Zawt will be contributing toward the recruitment of healthcare teams and individuals, their sustenance and wages, the cost of their support structures and the provision of essential medical supplies

our projects, we are often forced to embark on projects and commitments without adequate funding in place in the first instance, and to source the funds as we go along.

As a result of this we appeal several times a year to the General Public in the countries in which we operate, as well as to a select group of Zimbabweans and sympathisers who are no longer in the country. We also attempt to source funding form institutional donors and corporate bodies, both in Zimbabwe and in the UK.

But whilst this is the most critical area of need as far as we are concerned, we also have a great need of help in several other areas at the moment. Please run your eye down the column to the right, and if you are in a position to help, offer your time, resources or even advice on any of the areas, please contact us with what you are willing able to contribute to, and we will be in touch by return.

Thankyou … for your support
